Stories
Stories are around us and in us – inherited and composed, heard and read, experienced and invented. Everyone has one’s own chest of stories. Stories are an integral part of our lives, and their presence in everyday and festive situations is so self-evident, that sometimes no reason comes to mind why one should specifically discuss these matters, and – even more! – why one should learn telling stories, because we are talking every single day of our lives, telling stories and listening to them.
Storytellers
The storyteller always is the key element in some never-ending narration process, continually transmitting some essential information orally, directly to the audience and giving the audience itself a chance to be turned into storytellers.
Heirs
In Latvia the storytelling tradition is gradually becoming an important part of the cultural heritage, helping to ensure a balanced perception of this tradition within the society. Various storyteller’s organisations are being founded, events are organised, also regional festivals bringing together more and more carriers of this tradition, and developing their professional skills.
What to catch: stories or storytellers?
Story. Telling. Tradition.
Telling stories is an important element of the intangible cultural heritage in Latvia. Both the stories themselves as well as the telling and listening skills are inherited from generation to generation. In our day storytelling continues its creative development, not only enriching the knowledge and honing skills, but also diversifying the attempts at world exploration and promoting the dialogue between peers and different generations.
